How did Gestalt Principles come to be?

April 4, 2021 by Alexis Gutberlet

So what exactly is Gestalt you may be wondering and why should I care?

Well let’s first understand what the word Gestalt even means and the word's origins. Gestalt is actually the German word for shape or form via Google Translate. Surprisingly enough, Gestalt psychology began in Germany hence, the German word Gestalt. Max Wertheimer, a psychologist at the time was the driving force behind Gestalt psychology around 1910 where he recruited two other younger psychologists by the names of Kurt Koffka and Wolfgang Köhler.1 Most sources will note Gestalt Psychology began in the 1920s, but they do not note the fact that World War I was in the midst (1914-1918). Therefore, the psychologists, Wertheimer, Koffka and Köhler were separated and then reunited in the 1920s where Gestalt psychology research really started to take form.
